Owen is excited to sponsor FIRST Lego League (FLL) robotics team, called the Data Dragons. FLL encourages young minds to explore Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). In addition to a robot game, each season FLL teams are challenged to investigate that year’s theme by speaking to experts, identifying problems, formulating innovative solutions, and sharing their research with the community.
This year’s theme was about energy. The Data Dragons won awards for Robot Performance and Robot Design and were nominated for the Nebraska Innovation Award at their regional qualifier in January. At the Nebraska State Championship in February, they competed against 48 teams and won the 2nd Place Champions Award and an invitation to the Razorback Invitational, an international competition at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Last week, they competed against 80 elite teams from around the world and won an Innovation Project Finalist award.
Over their 17 seasons, Brian and Kit mentored fifty Christian homeschooled young men aged 9-14. They taught them skills in STEM, robotics, research, problem solving, community engagement, public speaking, project planning, and teamwork. Their competitive team was very successful, winning an award at every competition they attended.
